Pocket Park Volunteer- Boughton

Interested in the Environment and/or wildlife?

Boughton Pocket Park is funded and cared for entirely by the local community. It is a registered charity that relies on the hard work and fundraising efforts of volunteers. The 4.8 acre park is a beautiful green area for people to enjoy and explore in which wildlife can also thrive. Habitats include a wild mound, grassland and secluded pond. Please help us look after this lovely community space by using the litter and dog waste bins, and reporting any vandalism or anti-social behaviour.

PLEASE NOTE, CAMPING AND BARBECUES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

HISTORY

The 4.8 acre area of land was purchased in 1977 by Boughton Parish Council and then put in the hands of an independent management committee made up of villagers. In 2009 a new group was formed as only a skeleton committee was still in existence. In 2010 Boughton Pocket Park was awarded a Playbuilder Grant, which started the revitalisation of the Venes Play Area. This was followed by Community Spaces funding that paid for the remainder of the “New Venes Play Area”, plus a perimeter path, pond-dipping platform and many other improvements.

Without the help of a large network of people, the Park would not look as beautiful as it does today! Many supporters and volunteers help the Pocket Park Committee to not only raise funds for day-to-day maintenance but also to make improvements to the Park. It costs over £2,000 a year to simply cover the most basic costs of insurance and mowing.

Please join us for one of our clear-up days or add your name to the rota of those who carry out a monthly inspection and litter pick.

Have you experience of wildlife, fundraising or managing public places that you can share with us?

Help us by reporting what you see in the Park be it bad or good. It’s great to hear about interesting wildlife spots but we also need to know about anti-social behaviour or maintenance issue. Communication is key – please don’t assume we know!

Skills

Because of the variety of work different skills are required but nothing too specialist. Most of all you need a love of wildlife and an interest in improving your green environment! Volunteers would need to have the ability to get along with a variety of people, have some common sense and some time to offer. This may vary between 9 hours a year (3 practical tasks) or 30 hours or more a year.
