Opportunities with Northamptonshire Dyslexia Association

About

About us
The Northamptonshire & Buckinghamshire Dyslexia Association (NBDA) is a registered
charity, formed in 1985 by a group of concerned parents of dyslexic children, and teaching
professionals who wanted to make a difference to the lives of local dyslexics.
We are affiliated to the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) and still run entirely by a very small
group of passionate volunteers, comprising of a mix of dyslexia specialists from education, and
representation from parents and adult dyslexics.
Although Northamptonshire based, with little or no provision in other areas, we also extend our
services to: Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and surrounding districts.
We receive no funding, and rely on the work of our volunteer Trustees, and membership fees
(which barely cover the cost of the line rental for the helpline and maintenance of our website) to
maintain our services. Occasional grants have enabled us to run specific projects such as the
Dyslexia Conferences for Parents and Teachers, the DACT project for unemployed dyslexics,
and the Parent Training Initiative (DyPSI)
Why the community needs our charity
Dyslexia and Neurodiverse Co-Occurring Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) affect 15% of the
population.
We support the needs of anyone with dyslexia and those connected with them; families, adults,
educationalists, employers and organisations and Local Authorities. We aim to raise awareness
of the issues and needs of those with SpLD, to enable all to participate fully in learning and
work.
We can provide local directories for fully qualified Dyslexia Specialist SpLD professionals for the
provision of diagnostic assessments and/or private tuition for: adults, children, and HE students
to support applications for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA)
Our wide range of services is not exhaustive, but our main focus has for many years been our
free helpline and befriender support for dyslexic people of all ages with the provision of
confidential information and guidance available for:
Employers and Local Authorities, parents of children and young people, Adults and partners and
friends of dyslexics, provided by our small team of professional helpline volunteers - all experts
in their field.
Other services include:
• Access to Local Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) Tutors/Assessor Directory.
• Information on a wide range of topics to do with dyslexia and co-occurring SpLD.
• Dyslexia Awareness training workshops for: Employers. Schools, Teachers/TAs and
