To provide guidance, encouragement and real‑world insight to young people who are exploring their next steps into work, apprenticeships, training or further education. Mentors help build confidence, motivation and clarity, supporting each young person to recognise their strengths and move forward positively.
Some of the support you could help with could include:
- Support young people in developing goals, planning next steps and staying motivated
- Share professional experience, career insights and workplace expectations.
- Help build confidence around employability skills such as communication, teamwork and problem‑solving.
- Provide guidance on CVs, applications, interviews and workplace readiness (if comfortable).
- Encourage young people to reflect on challenges, strengths and progress.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
- Attend mentor briefings, training or check‑ins with project staff.
- Promote an inclusive, supportive and non‑judgemental environment.
Skills
You don’t need formal qualifications — just life experience and a willingness to support young people.
