Tool Collector

TWAM is a Christian charity that collects unwanted usable tools, refurbishes them, sorts them into trade tool kits and sends them to the developing world for livelihood creation.  They send around 16 containers filled with a total of around 225 tonnes of tools every year.  These tools range from sewing machines and knitting machines to carpentry tools and mechanics tools.

The main role of a Tool Collector is to be the first contact in their local community. TWAM's Tool Collectors are the people that members of the public contact to donate tools. Members of the public will contact you via email or phone. You will be given a TWAM email that goes on the website and will only give out your 'phone number to people who ring the office (because they may not use email). You can then arrange to either pick the tools up from them, or have them dropped off at your house, whichever you prefer.

You will then need to store them until the TWAM van arrives to collect them. This can either be on a rota basis, or when you ring your named Van Manager to ask for a collection.

Many collectors also promote themselves in local magazines and notice boards. You’ll be joining a great team and will enjoy the visits from the TWAM Van Teams and the invitations to volunteer days.

You will also receive a TWAM polo-shirt and fleece This is an incredibly rewarding role as you get to meet the general public and share TWAM\'s story with them. Many are so grateful  seeing that their tools are taken to be re-used, rather than seeing them go to landfill.

You’ll get a real buzz from many of the collections. Induction to the role is provided, which may be either over the phone, electronically or in person, and a volunteer handbook on starting. You will have a named contact within TWAM for any questions or problems and further training can be provided as required.

Skills

Tool Collectors need to be enthusiastic about TWAM's. work and the transforming power of tools. Many people donating tools do so following bereavement, so you will need to be sensitive and willing to stop and talk.

If you are driving to collect, you will need a valid UK Driving Licence but if you become a drop-off point this is not needed.  Legally a check for adequate motor insurance and valid MOT certificate will be done.  However, this is not needed for a drop off point.

You will also need somewhere where you can store tools awaiting collection from the TWAM van.
