To read to residents who may be unable to read for themselves, find it difficult or who may enjoy listening to others read. The Volunteer Reader’s main tasks: • To build a rapport with the residents and discuss their reading interests e.g. poetry, fiction, non-fiction • To read books, papers and magazines to residents either one to one or in a group • To liaise with staff and residents about times of reading sessions

Key skills needed for this role: • Enjoys communicating with and spending time with people, particularly older people • Interested in books and reading • Demonstrates patience and understanding • Trustworthy, honest and reliable • Ability to work in a team and under own initiative
